The River Protection Medallion features the unique Atlantic Sturgeon of the Delaware River, an ancient being that has demonstrated its strength by surviving every cataclysmic event since the time of the dinosaurs, while also exposing its fragility through living a precarious existence on the edge of extinction   due to the actions of industry and government.

The Delaware River is home to a genetically unique population of Atlantic sturgeon, a population that only exists here in our river. Due to the actions and activities of people and the actions and inaction of government, as well as failing policies, the sturgeon have been left hanging on for their very existence while advocates join with the Delaware Riverkeeper Network fight mightily to support their restoration.

Our Atlantic sturgeon are facing attacks on all sides from pollution, ship strikes, habitat degradation, and depletion of dissolved oxygen levels. The Atlantic sturgeon are on the brink of extinction, less than one half of one percent of the original population remains (that means 99.5% of the population has been decimated).

By wearing the River Protection Medallion, you are demonstrating your commitment to protecting the species and nature with whom we share this earth. Wearing the River Protection Medallion demonstrates your willingness to stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult and daunting.

This River Protection Medallion is made of solid sterling silver and was designed, cast, and finished by local artists in Philadelphia, right by the River where these majestic Atlantic Sturgeon swim in the depths. Local Artist Amy Ragsdale has designed this beautiful pendant to represent the power of our beautiful sturgeon so you can take them everywhere with you – a powerful reminder that while we may not be able to see our sturgeon everyday, they are always there in our beautiful river waiting for us to save them.
